Goan Vhonn/Kazarachi Soji

Goan Vhonn or Kazarachi Soji, some even call it Voronn/Vonn. It is a sweet dish which is served during a Catholic Goa traditional Jevonn that happens before a wedding or house inauguration or any Catholic feast. I came across this dessert first time when we had our house inauguration in Goa, and it became my favorite dessert. This sweet dish is healthy and is made by using Coconut Jaggery to get its distinct brown color, it can also be made with sugarcane jaggery which would make the vhonn a yellow color which tastes just as delightful. People do put cashew seeds and cardamom powder, however in my recipe, I have not put it as my family does not enjoy it with these ingredients. It is an easy recipe to make, however, a little patience and preparation is required for this recipe.

This recipe makes for 8 to 10 people.

 Ingredients:

1/2 cup Chana Dal/Split chick peas

500gm of Coconut Jaggery

3 and ½ cup of water

Pinch of Salt

1/2 cup rice flour

Thick Coconut milk

Thin Coconut milk

1/4 tsp. of Cardamom powder (optional)

8 to 10 Cashew seeds (optional)

Method:

Soak the chana dal in adequate water for atleast 4 hours. *If you are adding Cashew seeds soak them for 2 hours.

After 4 hours, in a sufficient large pan, add the soaked dal along with 3 and ½ cup of water and a pinch of salt and cook it till the dal is cooked but not till it is mushy. It should take approximately 20-25 minutes on a medium gas.

In a bowl/glass, add rice flour and sufficient water to make a thick creamy consistency and set it aside.

After the dal is cooked add the jaggery and stir till the jaggery is dissolved

Tip: chop the jaggery fine so it dissolves quickly.

Once the jaggery is dissolved, add the coconut milk and bring it to a boil.

Now just give a quick stir in the bowl where the rice paste is kept (as the rice flour would have settled down) add the rice mixture slowly to the pot and stir continuously. The mixture will be start to thicken then *you can add the cardamom powder if you wish to add.

Now bring it a gentle boil and your vhonn is ready.

You can enjoy it hot or can it serve it at room temperature!
